Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax Self Assessment (ITSA) is live, and we are now approaching the first major milestone: the Quarter 1 submission deadline, 7th August 2026. This deadline is particularly important for sole traders and landlords.
7th August 2026 marks the absolute cut-off for eligible taxpayers to submit their very first digital Quarterly update to HMRC.
The Timeline
- The first official MTD quarter runs from 6th April to 5th July 2026.
- Taxpayers are given one month and two days to compile, check and submit their digital return, meaning the deadline is 7th August 2026.
- This deadline applies to any self-employed individual, freelancer or landlord whose gross qualifying income (defined as total turnover across all self-employed and property streams combined, before expenses) exceeded £50,000 in their 2024/25 tax return.
The Process
Quarterly updates can be submitted to HMRC directly via the user's chosen MTD software.
After sending through an update, users will be able to see an estimate of their tax bill for self-employment and property income in their software or HMRC online account.
What Happens Next?
The 7th August 2026 is the deadline for the first quarter of the year. Following this date, further updates will need to be submitted on or before:
- 7th November 2026
- 7th February 2027
- 7th May 2027
In addition to these dates, the deadline to submit a Self Assessment tax return for 2025 – 2026 is 31st January 2027, and is returned in the usual way.
